B1 PRELIMINARY (PET)

A Cambridge B1 Preliminary (PET) qualification shows that you have mastered
the basics of English and now have practical language skills for everyday use.

Course goals/learning outcome

  • To increase confidence in your preparation and to successfully take the Cambridge exam.
  • To know exactly what to expect on Exam Day with regard to exam conditions and the structure of the specific parts of the exam.
  • To develop an understanding of strategies for dealing with time planning, time pressure, and time awareness during the exam.

Prepare and practice the grammar, vocabulary, language skills, topics and exam skills needed for success in the Cambridge English B1 Preliminary (PET) exam. All four exam parts will be covered.
Reading and Listening texts cover all core topics. Writing tasks include both sample and model answers, and Speaking activities are designed to improve fluency and accuracy and to help you express yourselves with confidence. Also, focus on developing the necessary grammar for the Reading and Use of English. Vocabulary input is at B1 level.

Level
The level of this course is intermediate. B1 according to European guidelines (CEFR). In order to participate in this course, you need to at least be at the A2 level. Because of that, you will receive an invitation for an official Cambridge Placement Test after you sign up. This is a comprehensive online test and gives a good indication of your language level (with regards to reading and listening). Based on the result, we will offer specific advice.

What do the lessons look like?
All lessons are specially tailored to the exam. Partly due to the small group size (min. 4, max. 8), there is plenty of room for personal attention, so that participants can also receive personal tips for specific points of interest.

Teaching material
We use the book Compact Preliminary Student’s Book with Answers (with CD-ROM). You will receive the book during the first lesson.

In total, there are 10 lessons of 2,5 hours each.

Study load
Besides the lessons themselves, a minimum of 3-4 hours of self-study per week is recommended/required.

Exam
In this course, we will work towards the Cambridge exam. The last lesson is scheduled to be as close to the exam date as possible (a few days to a week), so you can go to the exam in the right flow.
